BREAKING: Rolex just showed the highly anticipated novelty on their website and Facebook page: the Rolex Deepsea D-Blue Dial. Earlier tonight we’ve seen the first leaked photo of this Deepsea with a blue to black gradient dial. First reactions of forums were not really positive, to put it mildly. No new case and bracelet material, the new Rolex Deepsea D-Blue Dial is a normal Deepsea ref. 116660 with the known black Cerachrom bezel, blue Chromalight luminescence and a different dial.

The new Deepsea is a tribute to James Cameron’s historic solo dive to the deepest point in the ocean. As Rolex state themselves say, the dial shows a deep blue to pitch-black gradient that is “reminiscent of the ocean’s twilight zone, where the last trickle of light from the surface disappears into the abyss.” The word “DEEPSEA” on the new dial has the very same colour as the green submersible in which James Cameron dove to a staggering depth of 10,908 metres, the deepest point on our planet – the Mariana Trench.

As a reminder, the Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller (or Rolex DSSD) is the ultimate evolution of Rolex’s diving collection, as the non-compromised version of the Submariner (a complete history can be found here) and the Sea-Dweller 4000. It comes in a massive 44mm x 17.7mm case made of stainless steel with a titanium caseback. It offers a complicated construction to face the very high pressures of the deep blue sea – the RingLock System. On the left side of the case sits the typical Helium Escape valve. Thus, it can pretend to be water resistant up to 3900 meters (12.000ft). The Rolex DSSD is certainly one of the most advanced diving watch produced in serial. However, its design (especially the engraved inner ring around the dial) has always been quite controversial, even among Rolex’s fans.

Official retail price will be € 10.050 Euros (the black dial edition is priced at € 9.800 Euros).

Check the Rolex website here for more info about the Rolex Deepsea.

  1. Oh boy, hefty piece, kind of expensive. Comparison with an AP diver in forged carbon, which for me is a better watch. Better sized for a couple more of $$ and overall a more balanced timekeeper.
Now, I must applaud the crown for the dial, looks really nice.
Thank for the follow up Monochrome.
