A new colour scheme for MeisterSinger’s highly impressive “sonnerie au passage” watch

About a year ago, MeisterSinger presented what could be considered one of its most intriguing and unexpected watches yet. The brand, known for its singular use of hands to indicate a more relaxed take on the passing of time, surprised us with the Bell Hora collection. This featured a striking hour mechanism, which chimed at every full hour. Usually, such complications are associated with being costly and delicate, yet the MeisterSinger Bell Hora provides excellent value for money. And ringing in 2022, even though we’re already in April, is the new MeisterSinger Bell Hora “Black & Gold”.

MeisterSinger has so far presented the Bell Hora in two different dial colours, and the limited Bell Hora Anniversary Edition. This was presented with a more classical styled white dial with black, blue and red details, and was limited to 100 pieces only (see below). The new MeisterSinger Bell Hora “Black & Gold” is built upon the same architecture as the previous ones, but gets an alluring black and gold colour scheme. Black & Gold is the name we’ve given it to distinguish it from the others by the way, as MeisterSinger simply labels it as “Bell Hora”.

The stainless steel case measures a sizeable 43mm in diameter and 12.95mm in height. This height is needed due to the construction of the movement, which we’ll get to in a moment. The case is entirely polished and has a sapphire crystal on both sides. Positioned next to the crown is the on/off button to put the Bell Hora in silent mode when needed. The water resistance is rated at 50 meters, which seems reasonable.

New to this latest iteration of the Bell Hora is the jet black dial. Surrounding the dial are gold-coloured hour indices in a circular 24-hour scale. The single needle-like hand revolves over the dial twice per day so each index has a 12h and 24h digit. On the outer perimeter is the brand’s signature timing track, with markers to distinguish 5 minutes, 15 minutes and half-hour increments in between every full hour. The dial also features a gold-toned bell, and the brand’s logo and model name are printed in white.

Power comes from the MS Bell movement, which is a Sellita SW 200 base calibre, with a strike-hour module on top. This is wound by a central rotor, uses 26 jewels, runs at a frequency of 28,800vph and delivers 38 hours of autonomy. The striking module is hidden from view as it is sandwiched between the base movement and the dial. If you were to remove the dial, a snailing gong and hammer system would be visible, along with the on/off system.

Despite what the images show you, this new addition to the MeisterSinger Bell Hora collection comes on a dark brown leather strap with an embossed alligator/crocodile pattern and a steel pin buckle. Alternatively, it can be purchased on a vintage-style saddle-leather strap. For those with an eye for sustainability, MeisterSinger also has a pair of vegan leather straps on offer through the brand’s e-commerce platform and authorized dealers. The MeisterSinger Bell Hora “Black & Gold” retails for EUR 3,690, which to us sounds like an incredible deal for a chiming hour watch.
