As the Sun begins to lose its intensity and temperatures drop, autumn brings us the beautiful spectacle of changing leaf colours. It looks like Patek Philippe has taken inspiration from the warm, golden leaves for its latest edition of the World Time Flyback Chronograph reference 5935A. Introduced in 2016, Patek’s signature World Time complication (developed by Louis Cottier) was combined with a chronograph offering a rich demonstration of watchmaking prowess and user-friendliness. Offered in white gold and platinum with blue and green dials, the latest model is the first stainless steel version of this icon coupled with a gorgeous salmon dial with a carbon motif.

Although the specifications are almost identical to former editions, the new stainless steel case of the 5935 is likely to make this an even more sought-after watch. Measuring 41mm across with a height of 12.75mm and 30m water resistance, the steel case is entirely polished and features the chronograph pushers on the right and the patented pusher at 10 o’clock for the world time display.

The new salmon dial colour, described as a “shimmering rose gilt hue” by the brand, is decorated with a carbon motif in the centre. As the brand explains, this motif is, in turn, a reference to the decoration of a limited-edition stainless steel Calatrava (ref. 6007A) to celebrate the inauguration of the brand’s manufacture in Plan-les-Ouates in 2020. The crisscrossing pattern of the centre adds a sporty, more contemporary vibe to match the more practical and robust choice of case material. The hand-applied charcoal grey gold applied hour markers and the white gold faceted dauphine hour and minute hands are treated with luminescence. The space on the hour track at 6 o’clock accommodates the 30-minute elapsed time counter, which is also sportier than previous versions with its dark ring and contrasting snailed salmon interior. The 24-hour day/night ring is also two-toned, with a darker section for the evening hours and a golden Sun and Moon at noon and midnight. The outermost ring bears the names of 24 cities corresponding to the 24 time zones printed in black against a salmon background. With user-friendliness in mind, Patek’s patented pusher at 10 o’clock allows you to adjust the time zone.

It’s easy to forget that this first-class travel companion is also a sophisticated flyback chronograph. To avoid cluttering the dial with more counters, Patek has ingeniously inserted the seconds scale for the chronograph between the 24-hour ring and the city ring and the 30-minute counter, as mentioned above, at 6 o’clock.

The Patek Philippe 5935A World Time Flyback Chronograph is powered by the automatic calibre CH 28-250 HU. This in-house flyback chronograph world timer movement uses 343 components, including 38 jewels. It runs at a frequency of 28,800vph and provides 50 to 55 hours of power reserve. The movement, topped with a 21k gold winding rotor and fitted with a Gyromax balance and Spiromax balance spring, can be admired through the sapphire crystal caseback.

The Patek Philippe 5935A World Time Flyback Chronograph is delivered with two calfskin straps – one in grained taupe, the other in beige with a nubuck finish – and retails for EUR 63,400.
