Throughout its history, the Edox “dolphins” have changed appearances several times but remained faithful to the core principle of robustness and reliability. Over sixty years ago, Edox introduced the first Delfin diving watch with a reinforced caseback and screw-down crown with “Double O Ring” sealing technology. It was perhaps the world’s most efficient system to ensure water-resistance at that time. The latest reference to that long-standing history is the new Edox Delfin Mecano Automatic in moss green.

The original model was released in 1961 with a plain round bezel; Edox presented a version with a coloured bezel and a classic scale some four years later. In 1973 a new Delfin with a dodecagonal bezel was released, and it is this watch that inspired the Delfin launch of the day-date automatic model in 2020 with five colour combinations. This is also used as the platform to create a skeletonised line, the Edox Mecano Automatic. The new reference is nothing but an exercise in colouring, to be precise, “moss green”, as there are earlier models with similar characteristics.

The new edition of the Edox Delfin Mecano Automatic Moss Green is a 43mm diameter watch with a height of 12.5 mm. The stainless steel case is PVD coated in grey and has a 12-sided bezel in the spirit of the original Delfin from 1973. The skeletonised dial elements are finished in moss green, matching the rubber strap with a pin buckle. The applied hour indices and darkened hands are given a dose of Super-LumiNova.

The openings reveal parts of the Edox calibre 853, a re-decorated Sellita SW 200. The mainplate and bridges are skeletonised and offer a good view through the cut-outs. The caseback has a sapphire crystal so you can see the movement, providing 42 hours of power reserve. It runs at a frequency of 28,800vph and uses 26 jewels.

Edox calls this watch an “urban diver”, and I could not agree more. The most significant performance characteristics are present, 200 m water-resistance and technical features, such as the screw-down crown with double O-rings and reinforced caseback. But it lacks some of the features a diving diver’s, not a driving diver’s watch should have – a unidirectional rotating bezel with a 60-minute scale, to mention one.

Then again, diving watches are not for real divers, as they use Shearwater or Suunto computers instead. Nevertheless, the Edox Delfin Mecano Automatic is an efficient and well-executed watch; it looks very comfortable to wear, is not too heavy (120 grams), and is in line with modern trends. If the colour combination offered with this reference does not suit you, there are eight more options, including choices with a stainless steel bracelet. This new edition of the Edox Delfin Mecano Automatic with moss green elements has been available since September, and the retail price is EUR 1,590.
